Project Partner Lalitpur Metropolitan City
Project Location Lalitpur
Project Duration Dec 2023 to Feb 2025
Description The initiation of this project to design the rajkulo from Dholahiti to Saptapatal pond in Lalitpur was driven by the
imperative to revive and safeguard the historically significant water conveyance system, known as the Tikabhairav Rajkulo, with its origins dating back to the medieval period. The Saptapatal pond, apart from its cultural and social value, serves as a crucial water recharge aquifer. However, over time, the pond has faced challenges due to encroachment and neglect. To address these issues, the project seeks to preserve the rajkulo system. By channeling the No.1 Rajkulo from Lele river at Tikabhairav to the Saptapatal pond through underground closed conduits (pipeline) along the proposed alignment, the project aims to ensure a steady supply of clean water to the pond. Additionally, a water treatment plant is proposed to be installed along the conveyance route to enhance water quality by removing impurities and contaminants. To undertake this engineering endeavor, a comprehensive study was conducted, including detailed surveys of the existing system, hydrological and geotechnical assessments, analysis of water discharge and quality, and the design of the rajkulo alignment and water treatment plant. As one of the flagship initiatives of the Lalitpur Metropolitan City (LMC), this project sets a precedent for the preservation and conservation of rajkulos and historical ponds within the region.
The entire campaign to revive “Saptapatal Pokhari” has been sub-divided into two phases. The first phase includes the study, analysis, design and rejuvenation of the Rajkulo from the Chibahal, Dholahiti to Saptapatal Pokhari within the jurisdiction of Lalitpur Metropolitan City. Phase II includes the study, analysis, design and rejuvenation of Rajkulo from the Lele intake to Chibahal, Dholahiti. Upstream portion of the canal lies in the Godavari Municipality while the downstream is located in Lalitpur Metropolitan City starting from Sunakothi. The main purpose of the study is to ensure that there is sufficient flow of water in the canal, Rajkulo, throughout the season as it was before the area was urbanized.
Objective
The main objective of the study is to prepared a Detail Project Report (DPR) for the rejuvenation of the Rajkulo from Lele, Tikabhairav to Chibahal, Dholahiti Lalitpur. The scope of work of the assigned task are listed below:
- Conduct detailed topographical survey of Rajkulo from Lele to Chibahal, Dholahiti
- Carryout the site assessment work including Rajkulo route, discharge measurements, water use, interfering infrastructures, water quality and existing Rajkulo structures
- Assessment of ponds feed by the Rajkulo (capacity, area & use)
- Carryout the profile design of the Rajkulo from Lele to Chibahal, Dholahiti and Nallu
- Hydrological and Geotechnical study of the Rajkulo from Lele to Chibahal, Dholahiti
- Prepare bill of Quantities and cost estimate of the rejuvenation of the Rajkulo
